The Final Update
A few months back, I kind of left things up in the air. I said I was taking a break, and as you can see I did. I came back a few weeks ago and decided to add a little bit more and then close the book for good.
Version 1.3, which will roll out here and on the Play Store within the next few days, will be the final feature update. There may be further bugfix releases if necessary, but this is it for any sort of new content. The big addition is Challenge Mode, an additional way to play single levels at a time and try to earn stars for efficiency or special awards. It's something I feel adds considerable replay value and something I've wanted to add to the game for a long time but just haven't had the time to put it in.
The corresponding PC version will be Beta 8. Yes, that means that it'll never have a final PC release. In retrospect, trying to hit both mobile and PC, VR and non-VR, was a mistake. Design-wise, what works for one won't work for all the others, and technically, setting up for one makes it hard to also get the others working. I wanted to hit the largest audience possible, but ultimately ended up making a lot of design compromises and struggling with weird issues. The long and short of it is that I thought adding full SteamVR support would be relatively trivial, but it would actually require significant reworking, and would still kind of suck.
I learned a lot from this project, about working with Unity, about planning a project, about designing a game. I learned some great lessons and some harsh ones. I have mixed feelings about the end result. I don't think it's the worst game in the world, I think it's pretty good for what it is, but it could have been a lot better. And next time, it will be a lot better.
What's next? I'm not sure yet. In the long term, I'm working on a new IP with some (possibly) big plans. In the meantime, I have a few ideas of things I may or may not do. It's all pretty up in the air, but there will be updates on my website (xcvgsystems.com) and on my Twitter (@xcvgvcx).
Despite the ups and downs, this game has been a great journey for me and I've mostly enjoyed it. Thank you all for taking interest in it.
